Concerts and Home

This past week has been busy and fun. Adam finished his 2nd year of Optometry and had a week off before he started his next year. To celebrate (and for Adam's birthday) we went to a concert in Seattle and it was a lot of fun. We saw Dream Theater!

Who is Dream Theater you ask? Well, they are a hard rock band that is not mainstream, so I'm not suprised that you've never heard of them. They are Adam's favourite band and they have awesome musicians. I like most of their stuff, but some of it can be pretty heavy. I really like their slower songs, especially "The Spirit Carries On." Dream Theater is comprised of virtuosos on the guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard. If you play guitar, than I'm sure you've heard of John Petrucci, the lead for Dream Theater. His solo album is really cool too, all instrumental.

I was really hesitant going to the concert becuase of the opening bands. We check two of them out and they were hard core death metal. Not at all what I like! But when we got there we were surprised to see another band opening as well. They are called "3" and were so totally awesome!! No screaming and yelling for vocals, but real singing! They have a unique sound with acoustic guitar played like a bass. It sounds really cool. If you have seen the movie "August Rush" and heard the boy play, the acoustic sounds kind of like that in some songs (but heavy rock... well not too heavy). Adam and I liked them so much that we bought their new CD at the concert.

Here is what their website had to say about them:
"3 is a band apart: Dark yet uplifting, spiritual without any connection to religion - theirs is a sound that transcends the genre conformity of modern pop culture. Rapid-fire acoustic guitar infused with dynamic percussion, animated drumming and thunderous bass culminate in a listening experience that is at once accessible and unique. Polyrhythms pulse within a symphony of driving metal guitars and melodic vocal acrobatics. 3 offers musicality without pretension."

We got to see the band in the lobby (while we ducked out from the death metal) and they were giving autographs. They were all really friendly and we got to chat a bit and then they signed the CD that we bought. 3 is one of my new favourite bands and you should check out their song "All That Remains" on my music playlist to the right (there is some Dream Theater there too... some of the slower stuff). It is really catchy and has been stuck in my head since the concert (a week ago). I love it.

I can't help but put in a plug for people who work hard and have good music. I hope you like them too.

The next day after the concert, Adam, Elizabeth and I headed home to Canada for a few days. IT was a long drive but so worth it. I got to see my parents and their new home in Raymond, AB and just chill for a bit. I also got to see my brother Eldon, my grandparents, some aunts and uncles and cousins. Then we got to visit with Adam's brother Cole, his wife Diane, and their new 6 week old baby girl Hailey. She is so adorable!! I couldn't get enough of her! I love the new baby smell. Sadly, I brought up my camera with me and then promptly forgot about it. I have no pictures of our visit, of which I am rightfully ashamed.

I had a really nice visit and am already missing Canada now that I am back in the States. It's a good thing I'll be going back up in August. I can't wait!
